Cleaning black liquor tanks can be a dangerous job. But by utilizing new technology, CCS is able to reduce the potential for environmental, health, and safety hazards. As an example of such work, CCS was hired to vacuum and clean one tank in a series of eleven at a mill site. This tank, measuring 80 feet in diameter by 40 feet in height, was approximately 60% full of solids (which resulted from years of processing black liquor). With the aid of a 135 foot articulating boom lift, CCS was able to cut a hole in the roof of the tank and apply a 3-D rotating nozzle attached to a 605 HP hydroblaster to slurry the solids inside. The resulting liquids were then pumped into a holding tank to be recirculated back into the mill’s boiler and burned as fuel. Once the liquids were pumped out to the required level, entry into the tank was made and the remaining solids were slurried using 10,000 psi and 20,00o psi hydroblasters and then vacuumed into a holding tank for later use in the boiler. An estimated 120,000 CF of black liquor sludge was removed safely and effectively using this method.
